Different File Extensions

There are many file extensions that you may have always wanted to know more of. Very often, a good knowledge of a file extension helps us understand the nature of the file and the ways to troubleshoot it. Let’s look at the file extensions BAK and BIN.

Simply speaking, the file extension BAK is referred to the backup files. Various applications and processes use BAK files to save copies of existing data as part of their auto-save feature. BAK files do not have a standard set format, since they are merely copies or backups of the original data. You can always delete these BAK files safely as they are simply backups of existing files. However, in case you happen to lose the original data, you can always retrieve it using its BAK files. All you need to do is remove “.bak” part of the BAK file name. For example, if there is a BAK file that is named “MyData.doc.bak”, you need to rename this file to “MyData.doc” to open it and retrieve data.

Speaking of BIN files, these are basically binary files. These files can be sound, image, or even data files. A unique feature of a BIN file is that it does not depend on any particular application to open, develop, or manage its format. BIN files look like having junk characters when seen on a file editor. Unless the BIN file carries a clue in its ASCII portion, it is difficult to find out which program the particular BIN file goes with.
