Telstra EasyTouch Discovery Phone and Telstra T165i Country Phone
Telstra EasyTouch Discovery Phone

One of the most common complaints among older mobile phone users is that the buttons are badly placed, or too small – and very often, they’re right. Telstra’s EasyTouch Discovery phone claims to address those concerns, with large friendly buttons, spoken numerals and an easy to carry rubber grip on the back.
Pros: I tested the phone and also gave it to a couple of seniors to try out, and the response was very positive, with the easy keypad and rubber grip around the back being particular stand outs. As a full Next-G phone, you’re also not missing out on high data speeds or features either.
Cons: Although it’s Next-G, the small screen does make it tough for viewing mobile Foxtel or Web browsing compared to many other phones.
Rating: 5/5 – An excellent handset for those people who find that smaller keypads are a particular problem.
Telstra T165i Country Phone

The T165i is designated as one of Telstra’s ‘Country’ phones, which means in theory that its reception in remote areas should be better than with an ordinary handset.
Pros: The extensible antenna does improve reception somewhat – I tested on the periphery of a major metropolitan area, however, and truly remote areas may still struggle. With remote and especially farming use in mind, it’s also a solid and rugged handset…
Cons: Which is the nice way of saying it’s not terribly attractive either, and even in a pair of work pants, it’ll protrude in a fairly uncomfortable way. The screen is fairly small, and the buttons are a little awkwardly placed.
Rating: 3/5 – A decent phone if reception woes are your prime concern.
